This is often a topic of conversation that is missed when talking to parents about their new baby and the questions always asked are ‘how is mum doing?’. Of course, Mum has just been through one of the hardest things a woman can go through and with their hormones changing and emotions heightened it is no surprise that the focus is on Mum. But knowing how Dad is doing is just as important as it is a big adjustment for them as well.
Now Dads you are probably feeling overwhelmed at having this new little one that you are responsible for, while also being concerned about how you partner is doing after the birthing process. It is so important for you to ensure that you do not burn yourself out or overlook on how you are feeling.
I work with a lot of wonderful fathers through what I do and I can honestly say so many of them say to me that they do not love the newborn stage – this is completely normal!!! Those sleepless nights and endless nappies for a little one who you feel just sleeps and feeds can be slightly underwhelming. This feeling is one I see so often and does not make you a bad parent for feeling it.
Tips for bonding with your little one as a Dad
Lots of skin to skin
If your partner is breastfeeding once she has finished take baby and swaddle them up and have your time for cuddles
Dads are great at winding so always offer to do this after a feed
Do bath time – get in the bath with your little one
Do some feeds – allow your partner to get some sleep and take over a feed at night. Feeding your little one on your own can be quite a wonderful time when it is just the two of you together
Read to them, talk to them, sing to them – tell them about your favourite sports team
If you feel that the whole new dad experience is overwhelming do reach out to your GP or MIND https://www.mind.org.uk are a mental health charity who offer amazing support.
