Dummies for many parents seems like a taboo word…. That comes with some serious judgement. The truth behind dummies is that used correctly they can be an amazing safe tool to help with your child’s sleep. Research has shown that using a dummy can reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
I suggest following these tips if you wish to try using a dummy.
- When creating your child’s sleep routine ensure it is part of their regular routine
- If you plan on breastfeeding establish a good breastfeeding routine first before using this is usually at around 4 weeks
- Use an orthodontic dummy, these dummies adapt to the shape of your babies’ mouth
- I would suggest removing the dummy between the ages of 6 to 12 months
- Keep dummy only for sleep time and don’t offer the dummy during the day especially at ‘play time’
- Don’t put anything sweet on the dummy for your baby to suck on
- Don’t use the dummy cords – these can be extremely dangerous
I personally when working with little ones have found dummies useful and used correctly can be a real help to parents.
The Lullaby Trust talk a lot more about safe sleeping habits and dummies have a look at their website HERE.
